Raumonda, Columbus, Texas, Colorado County
This grand Victorian home was built in 1887 by Hans Heinrich Nicholaus Ilse and
his wife, Ida Marie Louise Baring, and was occupied by the family until 1954. In
1965 the house was purchased by the Raymond Rau family of Columbus, and its
restoration was completed in 1969.
The house is a fine example of symmetrical Victorian architecture reminiscent of
the Greek Revival period. It is built entirely of cypress except for the pine
floors and woodwork. Its roof is the original stamped metal. Windows are floor
length, and the shutters are still operate.
The interior woodwork retains the original grained painting which was popular in
the Victorian era. The handsome bronze hardware is original. There are three
fireplaces, each with white marble mantels. Ceiling heights are 14 feet
downstairs and 12 feet upstairs. All of the chandeliers are antique. Wallpaper
is similar to the original.
Raumonda is a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark in one of Texas' earliest
settlements.. The present site of Columbus, on the Colorado River, was surveyed
by Stephen F. Austin in 1823 as part of the original Anglo-American land grant
from Mexico. After more than 160 years of colorful history, Columbus today is a
busy, thriving community. It is carefully preserving its cultural heritage as it
grows and moves briskly into a new era.
